Hey Besties, today’s topic of interest is pretty privilege. I watched a video by Salem Tovar on YouTube which says pretty much everything that needs to be said but I decided to add my thoughts cause why not. As always have a wonderful day. Now let’s begin.

^ The video I watched

Okay, so what is Pretty Privilege? Pretty privilege works on the principle that people who are deemed more attractive—based on societal beauty standards—have an upper hand in the world and are afforded many opportunities that us regular folks don’t have. < from myimperfectlife >

I’m pretty sure you have seen the many tiktoks of people talking about their experiences on getting different treatments based on their looks whether it be that they are treated differently because they are considered ugly by the person or that they are considered beautiful by the person. < beauty is in the eye of the beholder as Salem says >

I don’t like the fact that you can be treated differently based on something that you can’t necessarily change naturally. < this reminds me of racism in a way because you can’t change your skin colour but people are still biased based on that factor > Anyways I don’t think being pretty is a skill set and it shouldn’t be treated as such. Plus people subconsciously think good looking people can do no harm so they get away with a lot of things. I’m sure you’ve seen the TikToks fangirling over criminals < murders > and their looks. And yes people are really that shallow as it seems.

But I like to blame that on history for making us this shallow since they plant many things in us and we really are just a product of our surroundings. And things we have been told really does stick.

The better-looking sibling – I think people treat the ” better looking ” sibling better than the other. When people meet the siblings they obsess over how pretty or good looking one of the siblings are and they ignore the other one, giving them no compliments or attention. The good looking sibling could really have nothing special about them but because they look good they are treated as if they do bring something to the table. The less good looking sibling could have many talents perhaps singing or is really smart but that is overlooked since they aren’t physically appealing. < and that is truly sad >

Getting opportunities simply because you look good – Don’t get me wrong if you are good looking but you also put in the work then sure you deserve your opportunities, as long as you deserve them I’m good with that. But if you have no skill sets or talents and you don’t deserve your opportunities and you take advantage of your looks or you rely solely on your looks then that’s when it really becomes unfair.

” I mean it’s sad because those who are objectively unattractive don’t get the recognition they deserve, but people like Ed Sheeran still do well.” – R ( a friend of mine )

Being good looking could also help you climb up the social ladder. Women who are considered beautiful could find a way out of being poor or having an unpleasant life by marrying a rich man that is just using them for their looks and body and it is not an uncommon scenario.

So I guess my message is to stop treating people differently whether they are pretty or not, give the same energy to everybody. Oh and not because someone may seem unattractive to you means that they are unattractive in general, be mindful of what you say to people because you could be their 13th reason.

If you watched the video that is at the top then everything is good but I’ll leave some other YouTube videos and links to other articles.
