Hey Besties. Today we're talking about how people love what they can't have. And yes, That includes your crush šš. I made a podcast episode for this so you can go and check it out. As always have a fantastic day let's get into our discussion.
^Episode above
^ The appeal of the forbidden is essentially wanting something you aren't supposed to have or do. According to Merriam Webster, 'Forbidden' is defined as not permitted or allowed.
^ I think this started from the Adam & Eve days when they ate the 'forbidden fruit' from 'the tree of knowledge. Adam & Eve were told they could eat anything in the Garden of Eden except the forbidden fruit and they disobeyed God and did what they weren't supposed to.
^When you know that there is something you can't have or are supposed to do, it becomes desirable. Desire can be defined as a constant and deep yearning or longing for something you don't have. < definition inspired from Urban Dictionary >
^ When you do something you're not supposed to do or obtain something you're not supposed to have there is often consequences and more so bad than good. A consequence is basically the result of your actions. I had mentioned the Adam and Eve plot already but they did have consequences after they went and ate the forbidden fruit. These consequences were rather bad than good and it not only affected them but for us as well. Now if you don't necessarily believe in the Bible then this really won't be significant for you, so just think of this as an analogy.
^ As a result of Adam & Eve eating the forbidden fruit and disobeying God, they were banished from the Garden of Eden. Before eating the forbidden fruit they didn't care that they were naked or even aware of the fact but after they started covering up themselves with leaves.
If you read books you probably have read the brother's best friend trope or the best friend's brother trope. And most of the time the main characters hide their relationship since itās somewhat forbidden. This is forbidden in the sense of like the brother doesn't want his bestfriend to date his sister and so on. best friend
And you have like the whole "bad boy" or trouble maker situation. In which the girls are attracted to them and the guys are somewhat envious because doing what you're not supposed to have become like a cool thing to do. Maybe it's because some wouldn't do it for the fear of getting in trouble, so when someone just breaks the rules they're seen as like maybe brave or reckless and people like to see that. It's kinda like entertainment for them in a way.
REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY
According to https://effectiviology.com/ Reverse psychology is a manipulation technique that involves getting people to do something by prompting them to do the opposite.
So if you want someone to do your laundry for you, you would say " I bet you can't wash my clothes better than me" or something along those lines. They will want to prove you wrong, especially if they care about what you think or if they're trying to prove themselves to you.
WHY DO PEOPLE DO WHAT THEY'RE TOLD NOT TO?
People, in general, don't like to be told what to do and the fact that you don't want them to do it will fuel the fire. It's like their say I don't care what you say or you can't tell me what I can and can't do in a sense.
"
When you tell someone not to do something, are they going to listen; or are they more motivated than ever to do it? Science would say that the latter is more likely because people like to be in control of their own lives.
The behaviour is purely psychological and is known as reactance, which is a type of mechanism where our brain wants to ensure that we're free to do whatever it is that we want to do with our own lives.
But that's not all; humans are also notoriously curious creatures, so when you label something as the forbidden fruit and then say someone can't have it, you ultimately make them want it even though they might not have even wanted it to begin with" - From https://www.labroots.com/
