HIS POV
“I want a divorce,” she says. My heart dropped in that moment. “Have you found someone else?” I asked my breathing getting heavier and my head raising.
“No, I haven’t found anyone, I just don’t want to be with you anymore,” she says. Her face is blank, I search her face, hoping to find something that says she’s lying. I let out a heavy, loud sigh.
“Is that what you really want?” I ask her, my voice breaking. It pains me to think of us not being together, but I’ll give her the world, I’ll give her anything she wants.
“Yes,” she says, her voice is low. I close my eyes and lean back in the couch. Up to yesterday, she was fine, I have no idea what’s going on. “What changed?” I asked her in a soft voice.
“me,” she says simply. Her whole demeanour is cold. Her sentences are short, her eyes look dead. A tear falls from my now red-stained eyes.
“You don’t look okay, are you?” I asked. “This is not like you at all, it’s like you’re walking around soulless,” I say not giving her a chance to respond. When she still remains quiet I take her hands in mine, “You know, I’ll always be here for you,” I say. She does not break eye contact nor does she pull away from me. I am so confused as to what is going on.
5 YEARS LATER
I was walking down the street when I saw her. She looked as beautiful as ever, her. I haven’t seen her since she asked me for a divorce 5 years ago. She’s alone, sitting in Karmic Café. I did not think I would see her again, after our divorce she had left to go overseas.
I then began walking to the café. I wanted to talk to her. Although it’s been 5 years I still love her, I always will.
I pushed open the doors making the bell at the ring signalling my entrance. She did not look up though. I then walked to the counter, “Hello, can I have an iced caramel macchiato, please? I asked the woman at the counter. “Sure, We will call you for your order when it’s ready,” she says with a small smile. I nodded in response.
I then walked straight to her table. “Hello, wife,” I say. She looks up from her computer, her eyes widened in surprise at seeing me. It was so nice to see her beautiful face again. “Hey,” she says offering me a small smile, it’s more than she gave me the day she asked for a divorce.
I pulled out the chair across from her and sat in it. “What are you doing here?” she asks. “I’m here to get coffee, isn’t that the purpose of a café?” I asked her. She rolled her eyes at me and I smiled. I missed her, she basically tore out my heart when she left.
5 minutes of silence have passed and the woman has called me for my order, I collected it and was about to walk straight out the door when I heard, “Wait!” I turned around, naturally curious of who had said it when I realized it was her and she was calling me.
With my coffee in hand, I walked back towards her table. “Hmmm,” I hummed. “I think you deserve an explanation for why I really divorced you,” she says. I stayed quiet and simply nodded.
“I divorced you because I found out I had cancer,” she says. She then let out a sigh when I remained quiet. She had cancer and didn’t tell me. That’s the reason why. Did she think I was going to leave her alone to battle cancer?
“You said had, meaning you don’t have it anymore?” I asked hoping she was okay. She nodded in response. I let out a sigh of relief. “Why didn’t you tell me, I would have loved you regardless,” I say. I didn’t want to hurt you with knowing I could die, I also didn’t know how you would react,” she says.
“You hurt me more when you left,” I say blankly. “We would’ve got through it together,” I tell her. “I would have never forgiven you If you had died and didn’t tell me about this,” I say on the brink of tears. “What happened to death do us part?” I asked. “What happened to in sickness and in health,” “Did our vows mean nothing to you?” I asked as a tear slipped down my face.
“Was my love for you not enough, did I not tell you I would love you forever,” I say. I leaned back in the chair. The coffee was long forgotten at this point.
She had cancer and didn’t tell me. Instead of staying and letting me help her get through it, she ran away. I got up and left. I need to clear my head. I still can’t believe she hid this from me.
